When The Screaming Stopped
She cried. He cried. I cried.
I rested his head in my palm staring into his deep blue eyes pleading for silence. I kissed his fuzzy head. She, on my other knee, blond curls tangled, whimpering. I couldn’t remember the last time I brushed her hair or slept or ate.
I was not the mother I should be.
I was failing –
floundering
– fading.
“It’s time,” the voice instructed.
The water was warm – not too hot, not too cold – just like they teach in parenting class.
Drops fell into the tub water –
plink,
plunk,
plunk.
“It’s time.”
And the screaming stopped.
Thank you to Tracy for allowing us to share her submission, and congratulations to her again.
Until next time, Scribblers!
